Anchored: A Journey Through Romans 8
The Hymn of Security // Romans 8:31-39

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:31-39

Because of Christ…

  • There is no condemnation

  • We are no longer slaves

  • We have been given the Spirit

  • We have been adopted

  • Suffering is real but not final

  • God works all things together for good

    1. If God is for us, who can be against us?
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31

“For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.” Romans 8:29-30

“The logic of our text, seriously applied, pushes us to the heights of confidence. It means more than God being graciously disposed toward us. It means he is for us in all that he does. We may be defeated at this moment, but evil will never prevail. We are always being led to victory in Christ. We can write our names in the verse: ‘God is for________.’” Kent Hughes

    2. How will he not graciously give us all things?
“He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” Romans 8:32

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

“By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence.” 2 Peter 1:3 (NLT)

If God did not spare His own Son for me, I can trust you with _____________.

    3. Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect?
“Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies.” Romans 8:33

“The devil is preaching the song of the redeemed
That I am cursed and gone astray….I cannot gain salvation
Oh, the devil's singing over me an age-old song
That I am cursed and gone astray
Singing the first verse so conveniently over me
But he's forgotten the refrain, Jesus saves.”
    Shane & Shane “Embracing Accusation”

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” Romans 8:1

Whose voice are you letting be louder than God’s verdict over your life?

    4. Who is to condemn?
"Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us." Romans 8:34

    1. Christ Jesus is the one who died
    2. Christ was raised
    3. Christ is at the right hand of God the Father

“…who indeed is interceding for us.” Romans 8:34b

"If I could hear Christ praying for me in the next room, I would not fear a million enemies. Yet distance makes no difference. He is praying for me! We too can draw courage and strength from Jesus. He is our priestly representative before God the Father. Are difficult circumstances creating fear in your heart? By all means, ask others to pray for you. But don't forget to count on the prayers of Jesus Himself. By faith, hear Him praying around the clock for you, as if He were in the next room.” Robert Murray McCheyne

    5. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.’” Romans 8:35-36

“Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted...” 2 Timothy 3:12

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” Romans 8:37

“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39

“‘I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. I and the Father are one.’” John 10:28-30
